The Commerzbank Digital Technology Center in Prague is looking for an experienced Senior Java Backend Developer to join the eBond SwapsQuoting Cell. This is primarily a software engineering position: your core contribution will be designing, building, testing and operating robust Java services within a complex, business-critical trading platform. Experience in trading technology or financial markets—particularly electronic trading, interest rate swaps, trading-related message brokers such as 60East AMPS, ION MarketView Bus or TREP, and ION Trading MarketView integration—is a strong advantage but not expected. You will receive support in developing the relevant trading-domain knowledge while deepening your Java, reactive programming, distributed-systems and software architecture expertise.

The eBond development team is organized into functional cells across London, Frankfurt and Prague. Each cell brings together a product owner, developers, business analysts and application support, owns a dedicated functional area and manages its own backlog with support from a Scrum Master. The SwapsQuoting Cell focuses on RFQ and electronic quoting workflows for interest rate swaps, including venue connectivity, market data, quote lifecycle and execution hand-off. Its services help the Commerzbank Interest Rate Swaps trading desk serve external customers through venues such as Bloomberg, Tradeweb and iSwap. The work combines reliable, low-latency engineering with regulatory and credit-limit controls, accurate instrument identification and timely delivery of appropriate prices.

The eBond platform uses a modern microservice architecture, reactive programming and fully automated CI pipelines with weekly releases. The team is also expanding its use of AI-supported and agent-based development workflows across the software delivery lifecycle. You will apply and refine these approaches in analysis, implementation, testing, code review, documentation, troubleshooting and developer automation—while maintaining sound engineering judgement and accountability for security, quality and production outcomes.

Your tasks

  • Design, implement, test and operate maintainable Java backend services for a business-critical electronic trading platform.
  • Implement and adapt RFQ, venue connectivity, quote lifecycle and electronic execution workflows for interest rate swaps.
  • Adapt the platform to continuously changing market and business requirements.
  • Use AI-supported and agent-based development workflows to accelerate delivery, improve quality and reduce repetitive work, while critically validating generated outputs.
  • Help the team evolve its engineering practices by identifying effective, secure and responsible uses of coding agents, automated testing, documentation generation and developer tooling.
  • Work within an agile team setup, collaborating closely with business domain colleagues, business analysts, architects, other developers, and application operation experts.
  • Actively participate in all Scrum ceremonies (Daily, Planning, Review, Retro), either via Teams or in person at our Prague office, Karlovo náměstí.
  • Tackle issues and requirements with a high degree of autonomy, while critically knowing when to align with the team and ask for help when required.

Your Profile

We are looking for an experienced Java backend engineer with strong software engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn complex systems and business domains. The following generic and technical capabilities form the core profile for the role:

  • Several years of professional Java backend development, with evidence of sound engineering judgement, maintainable design and delivery of production-quality software. Capability and learning agility matter more than a rigid number of years.
  • Strong professional experience with modern Java, including Java 17 or later, and confidence working with established Java 8+ codebases.
  • Strong experience designing and consuming RESTful services.
  • Strong knowledge of functional and reactive programming, using technologies such as RxJava, ReactiveX or the Java Flow API. The technical interview will include practical discussion of these concepts.
  • Solid understanding and application of Java Spring IoC / Spring MVC.
  • Proficiency in SQL (Sybase and/or PostgreSQL experience is an advantage).
  • Willingness to use coding assistants and software agents extensively across analysis, implementation, refactoring, testing, code review, documentation and troubleshooting. Prior experience is an advantage; curiosity and disciplined experimentation are equally important.
  • Ability to critically review AI-generated output, protect confidential information, and remain accountable for correctness, maintainability, security and operational quality.
  • Basic knowledge of Linux / Unix.
  • Clear, constructive communication: you think independently, express your view, listen to other perspectives, challenge ideas respectfully, ask for help when needed and support the agreed decision once the team has aligned.
  • Fluent in English, used daily in a professional environment.
  • React knowledge is an advantage.

The following experience would help a candidate contribute more quickly, but it is not a prerequisite. Excellent Java engineers who are motivated to build this domain knowledge are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Professional experience with financial markets or electronic trading technology, particularly RFQ, pricing, market data, venue connectivity, quote lifecycle, execution or trade lifecycle workflows.
  • Knowledge of interest rate swaps or comparable fixed-income and derivatives products.
  • Experience with trading-related message brokers and event-driven middleware, such as 60East AMPS, ION MarketView Bus, TREP or comparable technologies.
  • Experience integrating ION Trading MarketView or comparable electronic trading and middleware platforms.
